Thomas Merton

“Learn how to meditate on paper. Drawing and writing are forms of meditation. Learn how to contemplate works of art. Learn how to pray in the streets or in the country. Know how to meditate not only when you have a book in your hand but when you are waiting for a bus or riding in a train Above all, enter into the Church’s liturgy and make the liturgical cycle part of your life–let its rhythm work its way into your body and soul.”

  1. Alan Watts talked about a “zazen” of walking. Personally, emptying one’s mind while walking can open new worlds for you. Sometimes I pretend that I’m seeing everything new on the walk even if it’s a place I’ve walked a thousand times. To work I need to have a car which requires me to commute to work. Every once in a while, my car breaks down and I’d have to take a bus into town. It is a treat because I don’t have to think about driving. I can delight in the space inside the bus, the people or community there, and look at houses, creeks, bridges, and woods that pass as we drive along. That’s meditation, too.
